Everyone loves those jars of pasta sauce that cost almost nothing in the supermarket, but they have so many ingredients that I’ve never heard of in them that I decided to make my own version. It’s a lot healthier and a million times tastier!

It’s also really simple and quick to make, and has hardly any ingredients, so there’s no excuse for buying pasta sauce from the supermarket anymore. (I promise nothing…)

Leftovers should be fine to reheat for around three days if kept in the fridge, or around a month if frozen.

Serves: two people.

Cost per person: £0.53 (price based on Tesco Value ingredients).

Ingredients:

  • 1 onion
  • 1 can (400g) chopped tomatoes
  • 2 rashers of bacon
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 tsp mixed herbs
  • Salt and pepper, to season
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Method

1) Finely chop the onion, and fry for 5-10 minutes on a low heat.

2) Chop your bacon into pieces about the size of a postage stamp, and add to the onion. Fry for another 5-10 minutes.

3) At the same time tip your chopped tomatoes into a saucepan and season with the chopped garlic, mixed herbs, salt and pepper. Simmer for around 10 minutes, until the sauce thickens up nicely.
