How to save money… realistically. Vol. 1

When you become a university student you automatically inherit bucket-loads of advice, that while would have worked perfectly in the ’70s, probably isn’t too relevant now. SO, here’s your re-vamped tips on how to save money as a student!

1. If you’re living out of home – plant your own vegetables, herbs, etc. You wouldn’t believe how much money I’ve saved on food by growing my own. I know it sounds all hippy and ‘new-age’, but seriously – so worth it.

2. If you’re still living at home – STAY THERE. Coming from someone who’s been living out of home for over a year, you are saving a ridiculous amount of money by staying at home with the ‘rents. (I’m the sad girl who’s just declared she’s moving back home with her parents… totally worth it.)

3. This one may sound silly but has always saved me a dollar or two – buy clothes that can be machine washed. Dry cleaning can be expensive, especially if you’re getting plenty of clothes cleaned! I know that you don’t need the extra bill, so even if it means you have to send them home to mum, it’s definitely worth it.

4. Allow yourself a night out once a week. Whether it be dinner and a movie, hitting a club or just a night at the pub – one night a week shouldn’t kill your budget and we all know that a break from thinking about our studies certainly won’t kill us! When I say this, I don’t mean that you should go out and spend the rest of your money for the week, I mean in your budget, allow some money for one night out a week. It’s a good way of keeping your money in order and having a bit of fun along the way!

5. Hold on to your out-of-season clothes! You would have heard your mum talking about it at some stage, but she’s right – clothes come in and out of fashion so quickly that your leather skater skirt will come in handy again soon!

Aaaaand that’s it from me! Watch this space for Vol. 2 of my realistic money saving tips. Good luck!
