I’d never heard of this until a couple of days, but my boyfriend was raving about it so I thought I’d give it a try, and boy is it good! Cheese and steak in a sandwich, what more could you want? Given I’m currently trying to break my Subway addiction (ha, like that’s going to happen), this was definitely the perfect discovery – and a lot cheaper – and now I want to go to Philadelphia.

Tip: I used mini French bread sticks for this as they were reduced to 16p, but part-baked baguettes (cook them first, obviously) are very cheap and would work just as well. You can make various changes to this as you want to, such as adding chilli, fried onions or mushrooms, and your favourite sauce.

Serves: two people.

Cost per person: £0.90.

Ingredients:

  • 1 small frying steak
  • 1 small pepper
  • 2 baguettes
  • 50g grated cheese (cheddar or similar)

Method

1) Dice the steak and fry for about 2-3 minutes, depending on how rare you like it.

2) Slice the peppers into strips and add to the steak. Fry for 30 seconds.

3) Add the cheese to the steak and peppers and fry for a few seconds, until melted.

4) Stuff your baguette as full as you possibly can, and enjoy! Homemade fast food, the definition of perfection.
