Having a free simcard is a great way to keep on top of your monthly outgoings as a student.  You can top it up as little or as much as you need rather than being committed to a lengthy and often expensive contract.

But before you go and get yourself a free sim card you should ask yourself the following….

4 Things to Consider Before Ordering a Free Sim Card:

1.  What rewards do you get for topping up and will you use them? (e.g. Free texts, calls and data)
2. Do you get good signal strength on that network where you live/work?
3. Does the network offer free/cheaper calls to the same network? (If so maybe get a sim on the same network as family and/or friends?)
4. Is your current mobile phone on a different network? (If so you may need to get your phone unlocked for a small fee)

The Pros And Cons Of Pay As You Go Free Sim Cards

The Pros:

1. The most obvious pro of all is that it’s free (but you still have to top it up!)

2. You can stay in control of how much you spend as you can only spend what you top up! (Whereas pay monthly you pay a set amount regardless of how much of your allowance you use.)

3. You will not be stuck in a contract and you can cancel whenever you want!

The Cons:

1. You need have your own mobile phone already (or go out and a buy a SIM free one.)

2. You can’t text or call when you run out of credit, unless you have a free allowance you’ll need to top up again.

3. The deals are sometimes not as good as deals you can get on contract phones, however that has changed a lot in recent years!
