Top road trip destinations in the UK

Friends on a road trip

Get off the beaten track this summer and explore tranquil country lanes, scenic coastal roads and epic mountain passes.

The Causeway Coast, Northern Ireland

The Causeway Coastal Route makes for an epic road trip – dramatic coastal views, thrilling narrow roads, a ride through the magical Glenariff Forest Park, a detour to Torr Head for views across to the Mull of Kintyre, and grand scenes of Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne at Castlerock.

Inveraray to Fort William, Scotland

Pick almost any highland highway and you’ll discover lochs, islands and mountains, but this one is especially impressive – you’ll find you spend as much time pulling over to soak up the scenery as you do on the road. Beginning in Inverary, you’ll head north-west Loch Awe – never has there been a more appropriate body of water than this. The route also takes in Loch Etive, Loch Creran and the vast Loch Linnhe, as well as stone circles, coastal gardens, waterfront castles, Ben Nevis and the magnificent Great Glen.

Hardknott Pass, Lake District

Not for the faint-hearted, this old Roman road in the Lake District is taxing! Expect one of the steepest climbs in Great Britain, narrow, winding roads and tourists – you’ll be sharing the road with everything from ramblers to motorcyclists. But make it to the summit at 549m and you’ll be rewarded with multiple locations to pull over and take in the fantastic views in every direction. There really is no better or more exhilarating place to walk the dog or let the kids run free.

Conwy to Portmeirion, Wales

This route through Snowdonia is varied and wild, giving explorers the opportunity to enjoy natural and man-made wonders. The road takes drivers through plenty of pretty waterside towns, past remote shorelines and into magical, green woodland. Sights to see along the way include the unique ‘Italian’ fantasy village of Portmeirion, with its ancient castles and charming, whitewashed fishermen’s cottages.

The South Downs National Park, West Sussex

This route is ideal for Londoners and home county folk who don’t have the luxury of time to travel up to the Dales or mountain passes of the north. It’s also ideal for families with young children who want to enjoy the countryside without venturing too far.

Before you head off anywhere, make sure you take out breakdown cover and charge your mobile phone so that you can call for help if you experience car trouble.
