The essential winter survival guide for students

Woman wrapped up in cold weather

Yes, it’s arrived. That magical time of year when the sun has long passed the horizon before classes have finished, when you struggle to stay warm even under a metric tonne of blankets and when you tell yourself each day that you’ll start working off those holiday pounds… tomorrow.

We know you’re thinking of just calling it a season and hibernating until the springtime sun pops its head out, but don’t give in just yet! This winter survival guide will help you to pull your wool socks up, brush the frost off your shoulder and do winter like a boss.

Hit the gym… gently

We know you said you were going to go yesterday. Hell, we know you said you were going to go last month! It’s time to get off your… you know, and get moving… but not too fast. As you well know by now, in winter we feel tired and hungry all the time! Going to the gym and shocking your body with a CrossFit-style workout is a recipe for a New Year’s resolution soon broken. Start by taking baby steps (on the treadmill, perhaps?) and just get used to actually going. Then take it up a notch in the spring.

Blissful blankets

There is no greater ecstasy in the winter than a heated blanket. This is a fact. Once you try one out, you’ll be wearing it like a second skin and only sitting in strategic locations where outlets are within blanket reach. Be warned, these cosy cocoons are addictive and may cause you to never leave your bed again! Hmm… sounds nice.

Get delivery

Delivery is a dedicated student’s best friend. What you’re dedicating yourself to we don’t want to know, but nonetheless, delivery will save you time and keep you away from the hazards of icy sidewalks and a hacking, coughing populace who don’t know any better but to leave home. Just think about it. Pizza, sushi, Thai green curry… eh? Winter’s not so bad!

Thank God for Netflix

Winter is for binging, and there’s no shame in that. Why go outside when it’s sleeting and spitting? Invite some friends by, pop open a bottle of your favourite beverage and binge a classic or a Netflix original. Netflix now offers thousands of shows and films, and you can even watch in ultra 4K HD. No one wants to be left in the cultural dust come springtime when everyone’s gabbing about the next big show!

Party on!

Nothing gets the juices flowing like a party! In winter, people tend to avoid going out and waste their weekends lying about, psychologically dependent on their heated blankets and binging TV programmes. C’mon guys! That’s what the week is for! Change things up a bit and invite your mates over once every few weeks for some party games or just a get-together. Body heat will help cut back on electricity costs, and you know what they say about whiskey? It’s a liquid heated blanket.
