Cannes vs. The Oscars

With guests such as Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren or more recently Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Eva Longoria and Ryan Gosling… style has always been an essential part of the Cannes film festival.

Taking place in the small but perfectly formed city of Cannes along the French Riviera in France, this annual 10-day event celebrates the best films, directors and actors of the year. With glamorous parties, luxurious venues, and a breathtaking location, Cannes is home to a microcosm of jet-setters, fashion influencers, and the crème de la crème of the cinematographic industry.

The growing popularity of the Cannes film festival had us wondering whether it could ever compete with the prestigious Oscars ceremony… so, inspired by the book Paris Vs New York by Vahram Muratyan we have compared and contrasted the two film festivals.

Cannes vs Oscars

By comparing the two film festivals it’s interesting to see that they actually share many similarities but also have some distinct cultural differences. Take the red carpet for example, both Cannes and The Oscars have one as a means to showcase the actresses amazing gowns but Cannes gives them an additional test: climbing up the monumental staircase that leads to the Palais des Festivals in those killer heels.

One of our favourite differences is that of the humble selfie. Whilst Ellen Degeneres’ celeb filled selfie broke records on Twitter they’re actually banned at Cannes as they are not ‘classy’ enough; according to the festival president they ‘slow things down’ and ‘people never look as ugly as in a selfie.’ Well he may have a point there…

When it comes to fashion Versace is the designer of choice at the Oscars with nine actresses wearing the brand this year, whilst the big winner at Cannes last year was Chanel Couture – how French! But some things never change… poor Leonardo DiCaprio he’s never been lucky at the Oscars and has never even been awarded at Cannes!
